Balance is a buzz word. The search for ‘balance can be the root of much impatience, anxiety, over and under indulgence, stress, panic, and discontent in the modern western world as we strive to procure it, stash it, and sit on top of it feeling smug and glossy limbed in a difficult yoga pose, with perfect hair.
— Suss the Symmetry, Sam Smith

One day, fifteen years ago, I was walking through Soho Square, and I saw my friend Justin laying on the grass.  He was an A&R at a major record label and he was about to sign the biggest band in London.  ‘What are you doing?’ I asked, bemused that he seemed so calm.  (I would, of course, have been FREAKING OUT). ‘Taking a swim in lake me.’ He said lifting his head, shielding his eyes from the sun, and then plopping back down and ignoring me.

I scuttled off and I never forgot. Lake Me: A vessel of self.  A void of whatever you want.  Nothing even.  Who knew there was such a place? Especially when you had a load of other things to be done…

The way we acknowledge time spent can be as important as how we choose to spend time. It is my hope that through the shared awareness of the things we do to Revive us, Inspire us, and Restore our Perspectives, we might up the stature of that time in our minds, thus increasing the power it presents to empower our perspectives elsewhere in life.

A Swim in Lake Me, for this purpose, is defined as a ‘Halfternoon’ - Half-an-Afternoon to oneself.

A Halfternoon is entirely subjective in choice of pursuit, cost, location, refreshment, and company (or lack of).

Please join in and share your own Halfternoon. It will be featured in the Tea Room and you are more than welcome to share it with your friends - in fact, if you would like to invite a friend to contribute their own Halfternoon - the more the merrier - and the more we can all become inspired by each other to do Life Our Way.

love and thanks,

HOW TO HALFTERNOON

Form and Function

A SWIM IN LAKE ME

POINT ONE | BALANCE IS A SUBJECTIVE PURSUIT

A Swim in Lake Me is entirely dependent on self-definition.  A halfternoon is subjective in choice of pursuit, genre, cost, location, refreshments, company (or lack of) and and completely down to personal taste. Be brave. Be honest.

POINT TWO | NO GUILT AND NO QUASI PRODUCTIVE MULTITASKING

There is a tendency among the city frazzled, stretched mothers, the over achieving and over extended to scrimp and pinch the hours so lean that multitasking becomes the norm.  Unless you find true soul boosting joy in the satisfaction of checking boxes, leave the to-do list for another time.  This is not a place for guilt at taking time out nor one for general productivity.

POINT THREE | ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGE THE POWER IT PRESENTS

Acknowledgment is key to a successful swim.  With acknowledgement comes value and appreciation.  This is time for you and it is time that counts.   Acknowledging the symbolism in giving time to oneself is essential to reap its restorative powers.  A Swim in Lake Me is mindfulness with added allure:  love what you’re doing and recognize its power to revive you.  When we acknowledge and appreciate the magic, it stays with us and supports us through whatever crap could be waiting around the corner.
